Survival Cannot Wait for The Next Allocation
On 6 September 2026, Anak Krakatau’s eruption disrupted eight Indonesian airports and interrupted schooling and fishing. I live in this country. When I read that work has stopped, I want the conversation to follow the people whose income depended on doing it. What happens to the next meal? Who covers the expense of getting somewhere safer? Those questions belong beside the operational updates, because an instruction to suspend ordinary life has to come with the means to keep living.
On 8 September, BNPB official Rustian reported 1,730 disasters across Indonesia through 7 September, with 111,533 homes damaged. The scale makes any demand for individual preparedness inadequate on its own. A household can make plans, but a plan does not supply replacement housing or restore an income. As a disabled person, I also want support organised around people’s actual capacities. Someone who cannot easily leave home still has a claim to safety; the effort required to reach them belongs in the collective response.
The funding details matter. BNPB requested another Rp5.67 trillion in emergency funds on 8 September; it had already received Rp4.62 trillion, alongside roughly Rp1.08 trillion in regular funding. Rustian maintained that national disaster funding remained adequate. An allocation still has to become something a person can use. My demand is for public responsibility measured by whether support reaches people while they need it, and whether they have a say in what that support provides. Asking those questions should be part of our response to any official assurance.
I have no intention of praising communities for absorbing costs that public provision should cover. I want us able to help one another without exhausting the same people each time, which requires confronting the capitalist arrangement that makes access to necessities depend on purchasing power. Mutual aid can meet an immediate need while we demand the resources and collective control required to stop reproducing it. The contribution and the demand can happen together. Nobody should have to remain hungry to preserve the purity of somebody else’s structural analysis.
And I refuse to let that responsibility stop at Indonesia’s borders. People seeking support in Palestine or rural Texas, and those surviving the consequences of the war on Iran, all belong within the same commitment to a life they can direct themselves. Anti-imperialism requires opposition to state and imperial power wherever it constrains that possibility; it also requires material relationships among people living under those conditions. We can build those relationships through sustained redistribution, without asking one population to postpone its needs until another has recovered.
