Israel Kills Gaza’s Police Chief, Nine Others as Kushner Threatens to “Finish the Job”
Ten Palestinians were killed in Gaza on August 19, hours after Jared Kushner warned that if Hamas does not disarm, the United States would back Israel to “finish the job in the appropriate way.” A strike near a park full of children in Gaza City killed Gaza’s newly appointed police chief and the director of its women’s police force, among others; nine bodies were carried into al-Shifa Hospital that afternoon, and fifteen more people were wounded. A second strike hit Nuseirat refugee camp. The Israeli military said it had targeted Hamas commanders in both locations. It offered no evidence for either claim. Hamas called the killings of police officers a “new war crime.”
It came one day after six people died at the fishing harbour in Gaza City, one of them a child, when Israeli strikes hit a seaside cafĆ© near the port, a stretch of coastline that has functioned as a displacement camp since October 2023. Both strikes followed the same failed meeting: two days earlier, Kushner had met Netanyahu in Jerusalem, and Israel agreed only to “establish working groups” on Hamas’s demilitarization and Gaza’s sanitation. Netanyahu came out of that same meeting doubling down on keeping Israeli forces in Gaza until Hamas disarms. No pullback. This is what a ceasefire has meant since it nominally took hold in October 2025: a joint statement from UN-appointed independent experts counted roughly 160 Palestinians killed in Gaza in July alone and more than 1,200 dead since the truce was signed. “Nowhere in Gaza is safe,” the experts said jointly. “The genocide is continuing unabated,” they added, in the same statement.
The killing has an address. In March 2025, the State Department fast-tracked nearly $3 billion in bombs, munitions, and D9 armored bulldozers to Israel, the same bulldozer model the Biden administration had withheld specifically over documented use demolishing Gaza homes, a restriction Trump rescinded along with the human rights conditions it was tied to. The package included 35,529 heavy bombs. Numbers like that show up in defense contractor earnings calls, filed as backlog and future revenue, long before they show up as a specific building. Every strike on a cafƩ, a displacement tent, a hospital corridor, moves through a supply chain that starts in a US factory and ends in an appropriations line item nobody in Washington had to vote on, because the sale bypassed congressional review entirely.
This is what empire looks like when it doesn’t need a declaration of war: a client state given open-ended weapons and open-ended cover, a negotiating table used to buy time for the next operation, and a death toll treated as a rounding error in a quarterly report. Rejecting that arrangement means redirecting resources, the same instinct in miniature that mutual aid runs on every week, just turned toward the state instead of away from it. Below are people asking for exactly that kind of redirection, on a smaller and more immediate scale: rent, food, medicine, the ordinary costs of staying alive under conditions none of them chose. Give directly where it’s within reach. Where it isn’t, move the requests further than your own feed. Someone downstream has what’s needed and just hasn’t seen it yet.
